Nicely balanced SUV, er car

Sunday, April 24, 2022

I have had two GLA’s, the GLA45AMG and this one a GLA 250 4Matic. The good points: 1. Styling. I like the cross between hot hatch and SUV. This is my favorite size to drive. I like the interior which is classy and sporty but not stuffy and dull. 2. Utility. The car is sporty, drives smoothly, uses space well and does multiple duties from picking up groceries, to carrying kayaks and today was Home Depot where a box went through the back seat pass through for skis. With all weather matts its a true summer and winter car. 3. Comfort. For me, the perfect blend of sporty but absorbing bumps well and good sound proofing for a car this size. Seats are a hair on the hard side but adjust well. 4. Mileage and driving. The car is fun to drive and I often get 38mpg or more in the mountains here. Not sure why as I got lower mileage driving to Florida but with reasonable driving you get good performance and efficiency which reflects great engineering to me. Drawbacks 1. Space usage: The center console is small. It uses a dial which takes space and dexterity to use the screen while dialing through a hundred spots on the screen. Touch is much easier. On the plus they do not have the gross waste of space with silly trackpads like the GLC and other models. The bins in the door are a hair too narrow and things fall down and hard to get your hand in there to retrieve them. Limited glove box and need more cubby holes in the valuable middle spaces. 2. The electronics are a bit hard to use. The menus are not clear, Apple Car Play disappears and is not easy to find and bring back. No icon for it. You hit the TEL button twice and spin a dial. Crazy. The USB’s should be up front under instruments but are deep in the console. That’s very outdated but it’s not terrible. 3. Maintenance costs at dealerships will bring tears to your eyes. If you buy a Mercedes find out how much the A and B services are. They approach a grand for a B service in my area and no, you don’t get new tires with it. You don’t even get new wipers unless you add $200.00. A normal thing like a dead battery replacement was $636.00 and another $223.00 if I wanted a diagnostic hookup (I took a chance it was only the battery). From now on I will go to independents or at least price different dealerships if you want to buy one. Independents really bring the prices down from my research. If your car is out of warranty that is how I would go and even in warranty for services.

Right sized SUV

We use this one for our second car and we have found the car to be a fun and safe trip car. We did not know what the ice edition was, but it added a lot of AMG pieces. We will have this one for a while. Fantastic gas mileage, about 30 at 73 mph.
