In the 1990s, the idea of a luxury SUV was difficult for consumers to understand and accept. However, when the first-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class went on sale in 1998, it began to shift perceptions. The second-generation M-Class was produced between 2006 and 2010, and Mercedes introduced a third-generation follow-up for the 2012 model year. The redesign brought a more sophisticated look, equally influenced by earlier M-Class models and the E-Class sedan of the era. You could choose a gas V6, a turbocharged diesel V6, or a twin-turbo V8. An AMG-enhanced performance model was available, too.
