What Is Toyota's SR5?

Since the 1970s, SR5 versions of trucks and SUVs have been popular.

If you've been shopping for a new Toyota pickup truck or SUV recently, you may have encountered the SR5 trim level. The Toyota Corolla in 1975 first offered the trim, followed by what was known as the Toyota pickup in the 1970s. Standing for Sport Runabout, 5-speed, the SR5 trim on the pickup included an upgraded five-speed manual transmission and targeted a new customer segment: the sport-truck buyer.

Toyota SR5 No Longer Lives Up to Its Five-Speed Manual Name

The days of the five-speed manual are long gone, but the SR5 trim continues. Available on Toyota's midsize Tacoma and full-size Tundra pickup trucks, the SR5 sits one rung up from the base SR trim, adding popular upgrades with access to various optional packages. On the automaker's midsize 4Runner and full-size Sequoia SUVs, the SR5 is the base trim.

There are several new Toyotas with the SR5 trim.

The roughly $42,000 4Runner SR5's standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, and a three-month trial for a Wi-Fi connection. All 4Runners get a V6 engine and a five-speed automatic transmission.

Two-wheel drive (2WD) is standard, with part-time four-wheel drive (4WD) as an option. For about $3,000 more, the SR5 Premium adds heated mirrors and steering wheel, heated power-adjustable front seats trimmed in Toyota's SofTex synthetic leather, and a Homelink universal garage door opener. In addition, the SR5 Premium offers optional upgrades, such as a sliding rear cargo deck, moonroof, and various third-row seating packages.

Starting at around $63,000, the base Sequoia SR5 is no bare-bones SUV. Its features include keyless entry, push-button start, three-zone climate control, and a moonroof. All Sequoias possess a twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid powertrain making 437 horsepower with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Two-wheel drive is standard, but part-time 4WD systems are available. In addition to an optional heated steering wheel, you can add a towing package and three TRD Sport packages.

Toyota's midsize pickup truck gets a big revamp for 2024, but its SR5 trim level sticks around. On the Tacoma, SR5 is a step above the base SR trim in terms of features, with things such as 17-inch alloy wheels rather than steel, a proximity key, and color-keyed exterior trim.

Additionally, buyers can add such niceties as heated seats and a heated steering wheel, wireless charging, and LED bed lights. Double-cab models also include a coil-sprung rear suspension instead of the standard leaf-spring setup, which makes the SR5 more than just a feature-laden truck. The Tacoma SR5 kicks off at about $38,000.

Over the Tundra SR's price of about $42,000, the additional $5,000 or so for upgrading to the SR5 trim adds choice, capability, and many optional packages. The Tundra comes with 2WD and available 4WD, while the SR5 offers 18-inch alloy wheels; fog lights; and Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes.

While the Tundra SR can be a double cab with a 6-foot-6-inch or 8-foot-1-inch bed and a CrewMax with a 5-foot-6 bed, the SR5 allows pairing the CrewMax with the 6-foot-6 bed. Under the hood, the Tundra SR5 uses the SR's twin-turbo V6, but the horsepower rating jumps from 358 to 389, boosting towing capacity from 8,300 to 12,000 pounds. Where the base Tundra SR only allows access to a couple of option packages, the SR5 offers a menu of more than 10 additional packages.
