The Best New SUVs, EVs, and Concepts at the 2022 New York Auto Show

Start spreading the news! After taking the past two years off, the New York International Auto Show has returned with plenty of exciting vehicle debuts. While last November’s Los Angeles Auto Show was dominated by electric vehicle (EV) introductions, EVs shared the New York stage with several big, gas-swilling SUVs. These are the reveals that caught our attention.

Jeep

2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L

Continuing its assault on the luxury car market, Jeep introduced long-wheelbase versions of its Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs in New York. Compared with the regular Wagoneers, the L models gain a foot of length, expanding the cargo holds by 15.8 cubic feet. Both will use the automaker’s new Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, which Jeep claims is as powerful as a V8, but 15% more efficient. It’ll make 420 horsepower in the Wagoneer L and 510 ponies in the Grand Wagoneer L.

2023 Kia Niro Hybrid, PHEV, and EV

Kia took the wraps off the redesigned Niro crossover in New York. Like its predecessor, the second-gen Niro is available as a traditional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and an electric vehicle. The regular hybrid features the same powertrain as the outgoing model, pairing a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine with an electric motor for 139 horsepower. However, due to better cooling and combustion technologies, the 2023 model is more efficient than the 2022, with Kia predicting an EPA rating of 53 mpg combined (3 more than before). The PHEV receives a bigger battery, bumping its electric range by 25%, to an estimated 33 miles. One cool new feature on both of these vehicles is the Green Zone Drive mode, which tells the hybrids to run on electricity in residential areas and near schools and hospitals.

The improvements keep going with the EV, which uses a slightly larger battery pack than the 2022 model (64.8 kWh versus 64.0). According to Kia, it nets 14 more miles of range on a full charge, for a total of 253 miles.

Genesis

Genesis X Speedium Coupe

Concept cars are the public flexing of an automaker's design muscle, and Genesis is building itself up into the Arnold Schwarzenegger of concept car debuts. In New York, it showed off the X Speedium coupe, an update to last year's two-door X Concept.

This electric car shows off a more rounded fastback profile, as well as gorgeous, flowing lines, the brand’s signature twin-line wraparound head- and taillights, plus a new paint color. Dubbed Inje Green, the dark metallic emerald shade is inspired by the mountainous landscape around South Korea’s Inje Speedium racetrack. Genesis claims this model represents a glimpse into the future of its EV design; we can only hope a production-ready version of the coupe is in the works.

Subaru

2023 Subaru Outback

Subaru, the Japanese automaker with a go-anywhere attitude, revealed the 2023 Outback, which wears a fresh look and gains some desirable features. For example, the standard infotainment system now gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, and any model with navigation will feature What3words precision location technology, which should appeal to hikers, campers, and off-roaders. Top-trim Touring models also receive a new wide-angle camera that helps the vehicle recognize cyclists and pedestrians sooner than the setup in lesser Outbacks.

As for the revised exterior, the 2023 model debuts a larger grille, redesigned LED headlamps, and black cladding that is influenced by the brand’s new Solterra EV. We expect these updates to eventually make their way onto other Subarus.

2023 Kia Telluride

The Kia Telluride gets a modest refresh for 2023 with new wheel designs, as well as tweaks to both fascias, the head- and taillights, and the grille. Additionally, the cabin sees a few changes, including a curved display with a 12.3-inch touchscreen plus an optional digital gauge cluster of the same size. A revised steering wheel and dashboard round out the interior updates.

Kia will also offer two new off-road models: the X-Line and X-Pro. In comparison with other Tellurides, these models get unique styling, additional ground clearance, improved approach and departure angles, and upgraded traction and trailer-sway control. The X-Pro goes one step further than the X-Line with all-terrain tires and a higher tow rating of 5,500 pounds (versus 5,000).

Hyundai

2023 Hyundai Palisade

The Kia Telluride can’t hog all the attention when it comes to Korean three-row crossovers. The Hyundai Palisade gets a similar set of updates, with revised exterior styling, an improved cabin, and new technology. The updated grille is the most noticeable exterior change, with an eye-catching, waterfall-like motif.

The cabin updates are more substantial. The SUV receives a new instrument panel, a larger infotainment screen, a faster wireless charging pad, and support for a digital key (wherein you can use your smartphone to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle). The top-of-the-line Calligraphy model should also have a quieter cabin thanks to laminated door glass in the back. Lastly, Hyundai is offering a rugged-looking Palisade XRT, which features a skid plate and dark exterior accents.
