Hatchbacks offer the practicality of an SUV paired with the efficiency of a sedan. These days, with a lot of automakers having abandoned their small cars in favor of adding more SUVs to their lineups, hatchbacks are seeing a resurgence as sporty alternatives and dedicated electric vehicles. Here are eight new, redesigned, or updated 2022 hatchbacks.
Chevrolet
2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV
The Chevrolet Bolt EV is a compact electric hatchback from Chevrolet. It originally went on sale for the 2017 model year and gets a significant update for 2022. The Bolt EV is rated at an impressive 259 miles of range, making it one of the longer-range compact electric vehicles currently on the market. Overall, the Bolt EV blends futuristic tech with economical packaging and an approachable price tag - the Bolt starts at about $32,000 and tops out at around $37,000.
For those interested, there's also an SUV-bodied version of the updated Bolt, dubbed the Bolt EUV, though it's remarkably similar to the regular Bolt EV hatchback.
Honda
2022 Honda Civic Hatchback
The venerable Honda Civic gets a full redesign for 2022. While the two-door model goes away, the four-door hatchback sticks around for this new generation. Four trim levels are offered, including Sport and Sport Touring models, both of which can be had with a six-speed manual transmission. Sport Touring models even get a 1.5L four-cylinder turbo putting out 180 hp. As a whole, the new Civic comes with a modern design with a great interior. Starting prices start around $24,500 and range to just over $30,000.
Hyundai
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5
The new Hyundai Ioniq 5 has head-turning styling to go with its practical hatchback shape. It also happens to be fully electric, offering 303 miles of range from a 77.4 kWh battery pack. It's available with either rear- or all-wheel drive, and can go from 0-60 mph in as little as 5.2 seconds. Beyond its impressive powertrain, the Ioniq 5 is modern and sleek inside and out. The exterior seems to be inspired by 1980s Japanese car designs, while the interior is simple and screen-heavy. Pricing for the Ioniq 5 starts at around $40,000 and tops out at about $56,000, minus any available tax credits.

2022 Kia EV6
Kia's new electric hatchback, dubbed the EV6, rides on the same EV architecture as the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The EPA rates the EV6 at 310 miles of range on a full charge; it uses the same 77.4 kWh battery as the Ioniq 5. Fast-charging capability gets you up to 210 miles of range in just 18 minutes. Depending on trim level, the EV6 will also be capable of going from 0-60 mph in as little as 4.6 seconds. AWD and RWD are both available. We expect the EV6 to start at around $45,000.
BMW
2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop
Maybe not as exciting as the all-new EVs on this list, the Mini Cooper Hardtop is another 2022 hatchback getting updates this year. While under the surface it's the same third-generation Mini that's been on sale since 2016, the Mini Cooper Hardtop gets updated front and rear styling, plus some newly-standard features, like LED headlights, a digital gauge cluster, and an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Prices start at about $24,000.
Porsche
2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo
Porsche's all-electric Taycan gets a GTS model for 2022. Just like the other GTS models in Porsche's lineup, the GTS puts an emphasis on the driving experience. A follow-up to the Cross Turismo, the Taycan Sport Turismo is a hatchback body style of the Taycan that forgoes the Cross Turismo's rugged appointments. Pricing starts at about $134,000.

2022 Volkswagen Golf R
While we won't be seeing the all-new 'Mk8' Volkswagen Golf here in the United States, we're still getting the Golf's performance-oriented GTI and R variants. The highest-performing Golf, the 2022 hatchback Volkswagen Golf R packs a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, now rated at 315 hp and 280-295 lb.-ft. of torque. That's sent to all four wheels via your choice of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or six-speed manual transmission, the latter of which is exclusive to the US. 0-60 is estimated at 4.7 seconds, while pricing for the new Golf R hovers at around $45,000.

2022 Volkswagen GTI
If the $45,000 Volkswagen Golf R is outside of your budget, the new GTI is quite the consolation prize for around $31,000. The eighth-generation GTI comes with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine that now makes 241 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the Golf R, the GTI can have either a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Unlike the AWD Golf R though, the GTI sends its power to its front wheels only. With the dual-clutch auto, the new GTI goes from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds.
So there you have the most important new and updated 2022 hatchbacks. Remember that there are plenty of other hatchback models out there too, these are just the ones that have seen some kind of change for the coming model year.
