A new version of the Lexus GX midsize SUV will arrive for 2024, marking the line's first major revision in more than a decade and a shift toward a more rugged positioning.

The 2024 GX 550 will go on sale in early 2024, slotting below the larger LX in Lexus's body-on-frame SUV lineup. Here's what you can expect to find on this off-road-capable SUV.

The 2024 GX boasts a boxier exterior design compared with its predecessor but maintains the signature spindle front grille, albeit in a more subdued form that's been raised for improved ground clearance. Lighting is provided by triple-beam LED headlamps, and LED fog and cornering lights will be available for an extra charge.

Overall length is up by about 3 inches to around 197 inches overall. Between the GX's revised bumpers you'll find a squared-off profile, a step-up beltline, and chunky fender flares. Most GX models will ride on 20- or 22-inch wheels; the new off-road-focused Overtrail trims come equipped with 18-inch wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires.

Out back you'll find a wrap-around light bar as well as a power-operated, top-hinged tailgate. That's a GX first and a marked contrast to last year's side-hinged cargo door. The GX's tailgate also features a hands-free-opening kick sensor as an option.

Luxe interior makes way for plenty of tech

The interior of the new GX has been revamped with a greater emphasis on luxury and technology. Every GX ships standard with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a central 14.0-inch touchscreen that is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. Physical knob controls remain for volume and air conditioning.

Additional standard equipment includes a 10-speaker audio system, heated and cooled front seats, and , which includes features like all-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Notable options include a head-up display, a cool box, traffic-jam assist, heated second-row seats, and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.

The GX offers three rows of seating and space for up to seven passengers with its standard second-row 60/40 split-folding bench. Buyers can also select second-row captain's chairs, along with a power-folding option for the third row.

Up to six illuminated power ports and 12 cupholders are scattered throughout the GX's interior, depending on trim. Lexus promises that cargo space has been improved, and the 2024 GX is capable of accommodating five suitcases with the third-row stowed.

The GX 550 Premium serves as the entry point of the lineup, with the Premium+ trim positioned a rung up. Luxury and Luxury+ trims sit at the top of the lineup, while the off-road-oriented Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades branch out with off-road features and styling at the middle of the range.

Lexus expects an average 17 mpg from GX

At launch, the GX will be available with a single powertrain — a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 rated at 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission, a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a low range, and a Torsen . Overtrail trim models gain an electronic locking rear differential. The GX can tow up to 8,000 pounds when properly equipped, and Lexus estimates the SUV will return an average 17 mpg.

An adaptive variable suspension can be added to Premium and Luxury trim levels. Opting for the Overtrail grade unlocks the option to equip your rig with a suite of off-road driving aids along with a dynamic suspension that improves wheel articulation.

Lexus says a hybrid variant of the GX is destined for U.S. shores, but a launch date has not been announced for that model.
