The redesigned 2023 GMC Canyon ups the ante over its predecessor with a far wider range of technology and off-road options.

One thing’s the same, however: The latest Canyon still shares much of its design, its features, and its 2.7L, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with the Chevrolet Colorado, which has been similarly updated for 2023.

2023 GMC Canyon Price

The new Canyon will start around $40,000 in entry-level Elevation trim, GMC has said. Although the automaker hasn’t detailed other prices, it has said that a special version of the AT4X off-road trim level called Edition 1 will cost just over $63,000 before a mandatory destination charge (which has yet to be announced).

No matter how you slice it, that makes the 2023 Canyon a lot costlier than last year’s model, which started around $30,000.

Unlike the 2022 edition, however, the Canyon now comes in only a four-door, crew-cab form with a single bed length. An extended cab and a longer bed have been jettisoned. Considering that last year’s Canyon crew cab was priced around $32,000 to start, the $40,000-or-so starting price GMC quotes for the new model represents a hefty increase.

2023 GMC Canyon Performance

The Canyon lineup will be offered with just one engine, as well: a 2.7L, turbocharged four-cylinder preliminarily rated at 310 hp and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. In contrast, the Chevy Colorado’s version of this engine is offered in three states of tune, including an entry-level 237-hp version. Just as in the Colorado, an eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear or, optionally, to all four wheels.

In AT4X trim, GMC takes the Canyon in a far more rugged direction. Off-road-oriented shocks intended to improve response in rough terrain come standard, as do locking front and rear differentials to more quickly transfer power from left to right in low-traction situations.

Where other versions of the Canyon sit up to 9.6 inches off the ground, the AT4X offers 10.7 inches of ground clearance, and its special front bumper results in a sharper approach angle to better avoid rocks and other obstacles.

The Edition 1 package adds an integrated winch, 33-inch off-road tires, and underbody cameras that relay obstacles to the in-dash display.

2023 GMC Canyon Features

When fully equipped, the 2023 Canyon may rival some luxury cars with its tech. Available features such as a head-up display system, an 11.3-inch touchscreen, heated and cooled front seats with power adjustment, and real woodgrain trim are more typically found on bigger full-size pickups than in comparatively garage-friendly midsize trucks like the Canyon.

That 11.3-inch screen houses Google software that provides a desktop-like Google Maps experience, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A seven-speaker Bose audio system is also available.

All trims come with automatic emergency braking that can detect and brake for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as automatic high-beam headlights and lane-departure warnings. Adaptive cruise control, a high-definition surround-view camera system, and blind-spot monitors are optional.
